I think Jane, was pretty smart. She was abused enough to realize how hard it was to fight and, was constantly reminded by the people of the household that she needed to behave. Bessie said "You ought to be aware, Miss, that you are under obligations to Mrs. Reed: she keeps you: if she were to turn you off,you would have to go to the poor-house (Bronte 12)." Personally I think her fear of the unknown and and the idea of not belonging, was stronger then her fear of abuse by the hands her family. So when she snapped she had finally overcame that fear, possibly out of anger she let her Aunt have her torrent of emotions. She was old enough that she might not have to be reliant on her family anymore.
