Why are a lot of hero and heroines orphans? ~Kara S.

There are a lot of books out there that have orphans as their protagonist. Why do you think that is? Is it just for the purpose of giving them a sad or mysterious background? Or do you think it has to do with the big mystery that we keep hearing about?

  1. Great question, Kara. It is interesting that this type of protagonist continues to be popular throughout literary history. I wonder if peers can think of recent books with an orphan protagonist. I would assume this is not as prevalent in society today, so perhaps, the orphan novel is not as common, at least not in realistic fiction.

  2. I've noticed this somewhat as well in some of the well recognized books I've read. I wonder if this is because orphans see the world differently and so they have a more unique view of the world, more so than the rich or the children with parents.
