Why do authors have characters look into mirrors? by Kaleb

Authors often times use mirrors to show a different world that characters are looking into. Everybody it's their reflection staring back at them in the mirror, but characters normally describe who they see as someone unfamiliar. Jane calls the figure she sees a "strange little figure...with a white face and arms specking the gloom"(Bronte 13). Why is it that authors have characters examine themselves as if the person they see is unfamiliar?

  1. Interesting point, Kaleb. Now that I think of it, this does happen quite often in literature or movies. Do people actually do this in real life though? I suppose a younger person might do this more than an adult. It does provide an opportunity for the character to examine their features closely or stare at themselves trying to figure out who they are. It would be hard to have the character do this by simply lying in bed or sitting in a chair. The mirror provides the means to do a sort of self examination.
