Why do you think Mr. Rochester treats Adele so harshly?- Abbi Morse

While reading Jane Eyre I noticed how Mr. Rochester would treat Adele as if she were a stranger to him. Why do think this is?

I believe he treats Adele this way because Mr. Rochester does not feel very connected to her. Also, I think he pushes her away and puts in no effort to get to know her better. Furthermore, since he is very distant from Adele I think this is why he treats her as if she is just another one of his servants.

  1. I think it is because he actually is not related to Adele at all. It might be hard for him to connect to her in a fatherly way if he was not her real father. So, the only was he knows how to interact with Adele would be to treat her like another servant. It seems like his nature to treat others in this way.

  2. I think that the reason he treats Adele so harshly is that she reminds him of his past. Mr. Rochester does not like his past and is trying to forget about it and change it. Adele is that constant reminder of how he messed up with her mother. He also does not like her because he feels obligated to take care of her even though he does not know if he is the father or not. He tries to push her away but Adele likes him (even if it is because of his presents) so this makes it much harder to become detached.

  3. I think Mr. Rochester treats Adele so harshly because she reminds him of the hurt he felt when he discovered her mother with another man. He had loved her and given her so much, and she repaid his loyalty by coming home with someone else and leaving him with a child to take care of. Even though he says Adele doesn't seem like she is related to him at all, I don't think that's his true reason for neglecting her. By not connecting with her, he can distance himself from his old feelings.

  4. I agree with Emily. I think that he distances himself from Adele because it reminds him of her mother. If he doesn't have to interact with Adele he won't have to think about the pain he felt because of her mother. Also I think that deep down Rochester really does care for Adele. He didn't have to take her from France and he most certainly doesn't have to get her presents when he travels. I feel like the biggest reason for keeping his distance is because Adele reminds him of her mother and the pain he felt
