Why does Jane feel like she needs to make a connection with Adele more than ever? Emily Burnside

After having a conversation about Adele with Mr. Rochester, she learns his reasoning for neglecting her the way he does. He says he feels like she is not related to him and they have nothing in common, and even believes Jane will agree with him. However she doesn't and feels like she needs to show Adele more love.

I think Jane finds that she has things in common with Adele. She's a little girl who just wants to be loved. However, Mr. Rochester doesn't care for her, just like Mrs. Reed didn't care for Jane, because she's not related and is more of a burden than anything. Jane doesn't want Adele to have the same feelings she had to grow up with.

  1. I believe that Jane does not what Adele to feel abandoned or alone. In the beginning of the book, Jane described that she did not have anyone to really talk to and she did not love anyone. Jane feels that she needs to be able to show Adele that she has someone to talk to and that she is not alone. Adele needs to feel some love from someone and that person is Jane. Jane does not want Adele to feel like what she did in the beginning of the book.

  2. Jane can relate to Adele because of her past life and her experiences growing up. I think Jane feels a sort of responsibility to love and take care of Adele in a way no one loved and took care of her. Mr. Rochester rejects Adele just as the Reed's rejected Jane. Jane knows no on should have to grow up the way she did. She will do everything she can to make sure Adele always has someone that loves her and at this time in her life that person is Jane.
