Why does Mrs. Reed always turn a blind eye to John? Eli Weber

So far Mrs. Reed lets her children do whatever they want. She doesn't seem to parent them at all. Especially to John, who constantly just beats Jane.

  1. Many parents are deluded. They think their children are angels, when they are the opposite. Another part of it is probably her resentment for Jane. She doesn't punish her kids because in her mind Jane is the problem. There is also the part of Abbot saying that the Reed kids' good looks are pleasing and makes people like them, so that could be a factor.

  2. It was said in the book, that Mr. Reed was fond of Jane and made Mrs. Reed vow to take care of her like her own child. Obviously, Mrs. Reed has had some trouble loving Jane like she does her own children. Maybe by turning a blind eye to the torture John puts Jane through, Mrs. Reed feels less guilty and feels like she's not betraying her promise to Mr. Reed if she pretends not to notice.

  3. People are hypocritical. It's a sad truth of the world. People are so quick to criticize the way that other people raise children, when in reality, they aren't doing a great job either. Parents can also be ignorant to the fact that their children aren't who they thought they were, blinded by their love.
