"In Our Time" Podcast- Abbi Morse

Pros

  • Some topics were explained in more depth and made them easier to understand
  • Learned more about Charlotte and her life when she was younger
  • A few comparisons the speakers made between Jane and Charlotte were very interesting, and ones I would have never thought of
  • Different parts of the novel seemed to be much clearer now
Cons
  • Sometimes while listening to the podcast I would be confused what they were talking about or if they were still on the same topic
  • Seemed very long and drawn out
What piqued my interest
Listenting to the podcast rose many new realizations and quesitons for me. One thing I found very interesting was when the women speaker mentioned how Charlotte thrived on rejection. Her book before Jane Eyre, The Professor, was not very well known or popular by any means. Basically you could say the strong emotions Charlotte had after her book fell flat helped her next book become a success.

I believe in the end the let down of Charlotte's novel The Professor, helped make Jane Eyre, more popular. Charlotte had so much determination to get a book published and have a good review with the readers. This passion she had after her first attempt failed aided her in the long run. Overall, if Charlotte would not have failed at first, her success would not have been as great.

  1. I agree that the rejection from Bronte's book, The Professor, made her more successful when writing Jane Eyre. Also, I think this particular occurrence influenced the character, Jane, herself. Jane is rejected by the Reeds in the beginning of the novel. I believe this rejection made her more determined to live a better life. With this determination, she did well in school and became a teacher. Bronte used her rejection to write a very popular book, and Jane used her rejection to better herself for the rest of her life. This also shows that Bronte was heavily influenced by herself when creating the character of Jane Eyre.

  2. Abbi, I loved your post! Although I believe a bit more insight onto why her first work failed would have been nice, your blog is interesting all the same. This blog helped me to reflect on society during the Victorian Era and the modern era. Today, many people expect things to be handed to them. Simply put, people expect a handout, not a hand up. There are still some in the world who work hard, such as ourselves. However, Bronte experienced a different society. Her society was one in which people, especially women, worked very hard. Although women still earn only 80 cents to a man's dollar, gender inequality was much more prevalent in Bronte's time. Some, perhaps most women would have decided to marry well and settle down, but not Charlotte. She kept going. It is this drive that many Americans are missing today. They see the fruits that could come of labor, but they simply do not want to do labor. Overall, I loved your post because it shows how much society has changed over time. People used to go after their dreams. Now, people dream their dreams, but they don't reach for the stars.
