In Our TIme Podcast - Eli Weber

Pros

  • People they have on are knowledgeable about the topic
  • Lots of info on Bronte
  • Explained the book in modern language
  • Not just men
Cons
  • Super boring
  • Super long
  • Talked a lot about Bronte herself, and not JE

It was cool how the main character was an underdog the whole time. She was plain she didn't have any stand out talents or personality traits. However as the reader digs deeper into the book, she find that Jane is actually quite special. Somewhere in the pod cast someone said that Jane is aware of herself or something like that, that's a good point and it shows throughout the entire book. The moment in strongest support of this was when she was in her relationship with Rochester, and then she walks away from him anyway, because she believes it's the right thing to do, even though she loves him and he is the first man she had ever loved.

They also talked about how JE was a Cinderella story. While she does start off as an orphan and no one loves her, she goes off and meets a prince charming in Rochester. She falls madly in love with him and they seems to just live happily ever after. That was one thing that really bothered me, why would you write the entire book like you did and then just get rid of loose ends by saying 'And everyone lived happily ever after', it seems odd to me.

  1. I agree with your ideas about the Cinderella story. Even though it follows the general theme of a Cinderella story it was a very Gothic and in depth to there emotions kind of twist to it. I didn't agree the with the happily ever after either this whole book was a insanely boring drawn out to every little detail she ever noticed then ended it up with no explanation.
