"In Our Time" Podcast- Kaylee Gill

Pros-
This podcast was full of information about Charlotte Bronte. The women knew a lot about her life and went into great detail about her childhood and what she was doing while she was writing the book.

Cons-
Some cons of the podcast was they sometimes talked to fast and forced the questions. That caused the women to talk fast and to not go into complete depth about the question. It was sometimes hard to comprehend due to their accents.

Something that peaked my interest during the podcast was when one of the women talked about how Jane Eyre 's relationship with Mr. Rochester was almost like a fairy tale or gothic romance. She went on to say that Bronte perhaps did this because it was during the Victorian Era and the readers went along with it because in the beginning of the novel it was very realistic.

This actually made me think back to when I started reading the novel and it made me agree with her. While I was reading the book I really did not think that Jane was going to run back to Mr. Rochester but there was this thought in the back of my mind hopping that she would run back to him and live happy ever after. I also thought that through out the book some parts did seem very fairy tale like. Did anyone else think about this?

  1. I agree that there are some elements in the novel that remind me of a fairytale. I was honestly hoping that Jane would returen to Mr. Rochester as well. I find some of the elements remind me of Cinderella the most, since she started growing up with a harsh aunt and cruel cousins, much like Cinderella's stepmother and stepsisters.

  2. I also think that Jane Eyre is like a fairy tale, in particular, Cinderella. The woman in the podcast explains the reason why in great detail. I had similar thoughts because I did not think in a million years that Jane would go back to Mr. Rochester. She was such an independent (sort of feminist woman, that knew what was good for her. No matter what the odds were, I secretly hoped that Jane would go back to him as well. There is just something so strangely appealing about his character, that made me want Jane to go back to him. I think I just wanted to know more about his character, since we never really find out much about him.

  3. Yes, I agree this did seem like a fairy tale. Jane starts off with a rough childhood, goes to school, and meets the love of her life. She then decides to run away and she hits rock bottom. She almost dies but magically the doorstep she ends up on takes her in and nurses her back to health. This shows her road to recovery. She meets someone she could live with but would not necessarily be happy with but then has a dream. The dream shows her she can go back to her true love and she does. They then live happily ever after. I did not really like the book in the middle after she left so I was very happy when came back and the book ended how I wanted it to.
