Leaving Lowood- Emily Burnside

At the age of 18, Jane has been at Lowood school for eight years and is ready to move on. She wants independence and new experiences, and is confident in her future. When she was younger, she didn't have any self-esteem and had no idea what her future held. What has changed Jane's attitude towards life?

  1. Jane's self-esteem was boosted by the people around her. After meeting Helen Burns, she seemed to enjoy life more. Helens wisdom rubbed off on her that helped. She also had Miss Temple. She helped get Jane through her early punishment and also helped her see her own self-worth. Ultimately, Jane's friend help turn her life around. After Helen died and Miss Temple moved, Jane saw no need tom stick around. The characteristics Jane's friend help her develop were instrumental in her decision to move on as well.
