Where have I read this before? Alexie Emerson

Upon Jane's arrival to Mr. Rochester's home, Rochester says to Jane, "you have lived the life of a nun..." (Bronte 132). With Mr. Rochester's accusation of Jane living the life on a nun and Jane coming to his home to be a governess to his "daughter," this reminds me of the beloved movie The Sound of Music. Does anyone else make this comparison? What story/movie are you reminded of when reading this book?

  1. This totally reminds me of the Sound of Music! I haven't read this story line before, but I've seen it on screen. The similarities between the relationships in both Jane Eyre and The Sound of Music are uncanny. Both Mr. Rochester and Captain Von Trapp are rich men who live in beautiful homes. They both have nice, proper housekeepers. Furthermore, they both have children that they are not particularly fond of. Jane Eyre and Maria are also very similar. They have no family, have ugly clothes, and come from places of isolation; Jane came from Lowood and Maria came from the abbey. Of course, there are differences. Jane wanted to become a governess, while Maria was forced into it because the Reverend Mother did not see her fit to become a nun. Despite all of the similarities, perhaps the most interesting thing is that The Sound of Music was based on a true story that happened almost a century after Jane Eyre was written. Although Charlotte Bronte borrows heavily from her own life when writing Jane Eyre, the fact that these pieces are partly based on truth, yet share many commonalities is quite mind-boggling. Overall, Jane Eyre is starting to look more and more like The Sound of Music.
