Why is Jane and Mr. Rochester so interested in each other?

At their first formal meeting, Mr. Rochester is intrigued by Jane's beautiful artwork. After Jane starts to learn more about Mr. Rochester with Mrs. Fairfax. Mrs. Fairfax tells Jane about Mr. Rochester's early life, like his father dying and him being a bit of an outcast. Mr. Rochester finds Jane and Adele and while Adele is playing around, he flirts with her. I think that Jane is relating herself to Mr. Rochester because they both had tough lives when they were young.
